One August Post

After a month away, I made it out to Shaker Village at the end of August on one hot muggy night. The garden has gone through a major transformation in the last month. A hot dry summer has taken a toll. Pumpkins are full grown already. It seems way too early for that.

Riley Bog

Just south of Canterbury lies Riley Bog, one of my favorite close-to-home hiking, fishing, hanging out spots.

June 24

Sorry for the delay - it's been a good while since a post. My wife and I travelled south for a 3,000 roadtrip seeing family and friends. We're back, summer is in full swing, bug season is close to over. Here's a couple shot from high above the Merrimack Wednesday night.

Fiddles, Runners and Plows

Opening weekend at the Shaker Village had perfect weather . . .
and great music, a foot race, and a communal plowing for the gardens.

Good Quiet Night Shaker Village

The quiet, usually empty, Shaker Village I've been wandering through and photographing all year is about to come to life! Saturday is opening day at the Village. Go visit!

Past the crossroads

Near the Canterbury/Concord town line is a dirt trail high above one of the Merrimack River oxbows. It's one of my favorite places for a sunset, or soon a swim. Lots of tiny wildflowers blooming now. And black flies.

May 1 and Hot, Peregrine Falcon

The last week was warm and dry, then cold and rainy, with the year's final big snow storm in the mountains (we hope) - up to 30 inches in the Greens, and Extreme avalanche warmings up in Tucks. A normal New England Spring. Then Saturday it was almost 90 and muggy. Too hot for me this early in the year. Everything is blooming.

Driving home from Shaker Village Saturday morning I topped the hill in Canterbury Center, drove down the hill a bit, then was joined by a beautiful Peregrine Falcon flying 10 feet outside my driver's window. We drove and flew together, eye to eye, checking each other out, for maybe 30 seconds. That was incredible!

4.27 A walk in the woods

Woke up this morning to hear that the Greens and the Whites got up to a foot of snow in the last 24 hours. It's spitting snow here in the valley. I'm holding tight to Spring. They say it will be 80 degrees again Saturday. The forests are greening up and coming back to life quickly.

4.22 Sunset hour

Out and about in Canterbury tonight - Riley Bog, wildflowers and sunset off Old Shaker Road. Thunderstorms all around making for a cool breeze and dramatic skys. The blackflies have hatched, but aren't biting yet (much). Every day or two a new wildflower or tree is blooming. Nice evening.
